FAQ
Can I use the plastic column that the MCD comes with to check the calibration of the unit?
The MCD is composed of two separate frames (upper and lower) that are not hinged together. As a result, the MCD ships with a plastic storage column that holds these two frames together for easy storage. This column is not designed for calibration purposes: hence, the horizontal indicator pins may not line up on the table cross hairs. The MCD is designed on the same axis as our articulator so if a test column has been made, it can be used to confirm the MCD’s accuracy.
What does MCD stand for and what would I use it for?
The MCD stands for “Measures Condyle Displacement” and is used to measure where the condyle is located relative to the fossa box. This type of device may also be known more commonly as a Condyle Placement Indicator (CPI) or Mandibular Placement Indicator (MPI). When a patient’s condyles are seated and stable, the position at Centric Occlusion will be the same as in Centric Relation. However, many patients (especially those that mention having headaches, jaw pain, clicking, etc) will most likely have condyles that are displaced. By treating the patient with bite splint therapy or a de-progarmmer, the condyle can become properly seated in the fossa and maintain a stable position.
